Industrial engineering concerns pressure vessels. Pressure vessels are containers of gasses or liquids under a different pressure from the ambient pressure. The design, fabrication and operation of pressure vessels are regulated by technical authorities which are supported by legislation. The exact definition of a pressure vessel varies from country to country.
The design contains parameters like the maximum safe amount of operating pressure and temperature, safety factor, corrosion allowance and minimum design temperature (for brittle fracture). The construction is tested with non-destructive tests, like ultrasone testing, radiography and pressure tests. Hydrostatic testing is the preferred choice, because it is a safe method and because less energy will be released in case a fracture occurs during testing.
